Hawker Sea Fury in Australian Service

Hawker Sea Fury in Australian Service

The Royal Australian Navy’s Fleet Air Arm operated a total of 101 Hawker Sea Fury fighters. These 101 aircraft were the ones officially taken onto the RAN’s books. Prior to delivery of the first 25 Sea Furies to HMAS Sydney, conversion training was undertaken with Royal Navy aircraft in the UK. Additionally, the Royal Navy provided attrition aircraft during the Korean conflict to replace aircraft lost or damaged.

During the Korean War, HMAS Sydney operated 805 and 808 Squadrons with Sea Furies (along with 817 Sqn with Fairey Fireflies). With the arrival of HMAS Vengeance, 808 Sqn was transferred to the new carrier and replaced by 850 Sqn. 850 also served onboards Vengeance.

Sea Furies were replaced by the Sea Venom from 1955, with 805 Sqn the last to squadron to transition on 18 March 1958. Once retired from frontline service, the Sea Furies were transferred to 723, 724 and 725 Squadrons for training purposes.
