Cobar Miners’ Heritage Park

The Cobar Mining Heritage Park is just over the road from The Great Cobar Museum.

The most significant feature is the Cobar Miners Memorial which was opened in 2021. The memorial commemorates those who have died in the local Cobar mines and those who have died from mining-related diseases. There are stories, photographs, maps and the names of those who have died because of accidents in the mines of Cobar, New South Wales.

The memorial represents an underground mining chamber with concrete walls. One of the walls has a tag-on board. Tags are used by miners as they enter a mine, tagging on as they enter and removing the tag, or tagging off as they leave. This enables other miners and supervisors to see if anyone is still in the mine. The board has a brass tags for each victim. This is a poignant reminder of the fact that these miners did not tag off on the shift that day.

There is also an interpretation board to honour those who have lost their lives due to industrial disease.

The park also features a bronze sculpture of a miner, a restored stamper battery from the Mount Boppy Mine, a loader from the CSA Mine, a head frame and winder from the Chesney Mine and the Miners Memorial bell tower.
