Farrell Flat Silo Art
Located in the small village of Farrell Flat, is a beautiful silo art of an RX locomotive. Farrell Flat is around a two-hour drive north of Adelaide in the mid-north of South Australia.
The artwork depicts RX55, the last passenger train to travel through Farrell Flat at the closing of the passenger service in December 1986. The last freight service was in January 1999. The RX locomotives were built at the Islington Railway Workshops, in Adelaide for the South Australian Railways. 84 were built between 1885 and 1916.
RX55 began service on 13 November 1913 and was retired in July 1964.
The artwork was undertaken by artists Jarrod Soden and Matthew Knights in November 2020. The depiction of the train surrounded by wheat illustrates the importance of the railway in opening the area to farming. This also enabled passengers and goods to be moved to and from Adelaide in only 5 hours. Prior to this a bullock dray could only cover 10 miles in a day.
If you visit the area, there is a hotel conveniently located opposite the silos, should you need a refreshment.
This beautiful piece of art is only a short diversion off the main A32 road from Adelaide and worth the stop to see it.
