The Tree of Knowledge in Loxton

Tree of Knowledge Loxton South Australia

Nestled along the riverfront of Loxton in South Australia’s Riverland region, the Tree of Knowledge stands both as a living natural monument and a compelling record of the mighty fluctuations of the Murray River.

What makes the Tree of Knowledge so unique is that its enormous trunk has metal plaques indicating the heights reached by past floods along the Murray. The earliest known mark dates from 1931. One of the most prominent markers — easily visible well above human height — records the flood of 1956, widely regarded as the region’s worst. Standing beside the tree and looking up, you can almost appreciate the magnitude of the river’s force in those days.

The tree is set in the Lions Park, which offers picnic tables, lawns, toilets, barbecue facilities which makes the visit comfortable and family friendly. You might also get a close up look at a paddle steamer. The Murray River Queen was there when we visited.

Not far from here are The Big Pelican and the Heaven Clifftop Viewpoint.
