Hōkan-ji Temple (Yasaka Pagoda) Kyoto

Hōkan-ji Temple, better known as Yasaka Pagoda, is in Kyoto’s historic Higashiyama district. Its five-storey wooden pagoda rises 46 metres above the surrounding traditional streets.

According to tradition, Prince Shōtoku founded the temple in 589 following a divine message in a dream. However, fires destroyed the original structures several times. Consequently, the present pagoda dates from 1440, when shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori ordered its reconstruction.

The pagoda features five curved tiled roofs and wooden construction. Although the original temple complex occupied a larger area, only a few structures survive today.

Visitors can explore the pagoda’s interior when it opens to the public (Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00). Inside, Buddhist statues and historic architectural features provide insight into Japanese religious traditions. However, opening arrangements vary, so don’t assume you will get in.

The surrounding streets, particular, Yasaka-dori offer a great view of the pagoda rising above traditional wooden houses. Additionally, nearby Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka feature preserved buildings, small shops and traditional restaurants. We saw the pagoda as we walked through the area to see the old buildings.

The area provides excellent photographic opportunities, especially during the quieter early morning hours.

How to Get to the Yasaka Pagoda

From Kyoto Station

Take Kyoto City Bus 206 from bus stop D2 outside Kyoto Station. Get off at Kiyomizu-michi, then walk approximately five minutes to the pagoda. Allow around 25–35 minutes overall, depending on traffic.

While Exploring the historic Back Streets

We walked there as part of exploring the Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka and the wider Higashiyama district. Starting at Kiyomizu-dera, it took us through the historic back streets and past several shrines and temples before ending at the Yasaka Shrine.

Entry

A ticket (¥500 for adults, cash only) is required only to enter the pagoda’s second floor, which usually opens on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00. Opening days are irregular, so check the notice at the entrance before planning around them. As we visited on a week day, the temple was closed, so unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the inside.
