Coonamble New South Wales
Coonamble is a small rural town located in the Orana region of New South Wales, situated along the banks of the Castlereagh River. Established in the late nineteenth century, it developed as a service centre for surrounding pastoral and agricultural districts, particularly those focused on sheep grazing, wool production, and cropping.
The town has a strong connection to the Australian outback identity, reflected in its wide streets, historic buildings, and community events. One of its most notable attractions is the annual Coonamble Rodeo and Campdraft, which draws competitors and spectators from across the country and highlights the region’s deep ties to stock handling and rural traditions.
Coonamble also serves as a gateway to nearby natural environments, including the Pilliga Forest, known for its biodiversity and cultural significance.
We had a brief stop in town on our way to Lightning Ridge, noticing the interesting town sign with emus and the decorated water tower.
