Hawker Hurricane in Romanian Service

Hawker Hurricane in Romanian Service

Prior to the start of the Second World War, The Romanian Air Force ordered 50 Hawker Hurricanes. Twelve had been delivered before Romania sided with the Axis, terminating further deliveries. Assigned to Escadrila 53 Vânătoare (Fighter Squadron No 53), they participated in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union, where two pilots became aces on the Hurricane. Germany supplied two replacement Hurricanes obtained from Yugoslavia, but attrition meant that they were replaced by Romanian built  IAR 80 fighters.
