Macchi C.205 Italian Service

After the end of the Second World War, the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana) retained a small number of surviving Macchi C.205 fighters, which had proven to be among the most capable Italian aircraft of the conflict. In the immediate post-war period, Italy faced severe restrictions on military aviation under the terms of the peace treaty, limiting both the size and capability of its air force. Despite this, the C.205 remained in service as an interim fighter due to the lack of more modern equipment.

These aircraft were primarily used for training, air policing, and maintaining a minimal level of operational readiness during the late 1940s.

By the early 1950s, the surviving C.205s were gradually withdrawn from service as Italy began to receive modern aircraft through the NATO framework
