Parnall G.4/31 General Purpose Aircraft

Parnall G.4/31 General Purpose Aircraft

The Parnall G.4/31 was designed as a general purpose aircraft capable of filling the bomber/reconnaissance and torpedo bombing roles for the Royal Air Force. Handley Page, Vickers, Fairey and Armstrong Whitworth also tendered designs for the role, with the Vickers Type 253 winning the competition. However, the contract with Vickers was cancelled when it became apparent that the Vickers monoplane derivative was significantly superior. It was ordered as the Wellesley bomber.

The Parnall G.4/31 continued to be used by the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment for armament trials until March 1937 when it was damaged in a crash and written off.
