Australian National Aviation Museum

Australian National Aviation Museum

What an excellent museum!  The Australian National Aviation Museum is full of Australia’s aviation history and has some unique, or hard to find exhibits.  The Bristol Freighter, DC2 and Beaufighter are particular standouts.

The Collection

Many of the displays are undercover and protected by the elements. However, the larger aircraft are outside. This includes the Bristol Freighter, Canberra and Viscount. Also outside are the Meteor, Sabre and Gannet.  Hopefully careful maintenance will prevent the weather from causing too much deterioration.

Most displays have an explanation near them detailing the aircraft and what it did. The undercover displays are at times very close to each other.  This is due to space limitations.  Although you can get close to them, taking photos can be tricky as other displays tend to get in the way.

The early model Wirraway, Beaufighter, Mirage and Firefly are all displayed nicely and the steps up to some of their cockpits allows some great views over the collection.

Also present is an Ikara anti-submarine missile and the turret from the cancelled CAC Woomera light bomber.

Getting There and Entry Prices

The staff were very friendly and helpful and can answer most of your questions.  The gift shop has many aviation souvenirs, and sells drinks. The entry fee is $10 per person, or $20 for a family.  Anyone interested in aviation will enjoy looking around here.

We drove to the Australian National Aviation Museum. Parking is plentiful and there were not many other visitors there, so it was easy to see the exhibits. It is possible to get public transport to the museum, but it involves a train ,bus and then a 20 minute walk.
