At Lakeside Puffing Billy Steam Train

Puffing Billy Steam Train

Puffing Billy Railway is a heritage steam train experience nestled in the Dandenong Ranges, approximately one hour east of Melbourne. Operating since 1900, this narrow-gauge railway offers visitors a nostalgic journey through lush forests, fern gullies, and over historic timber trestle bridges.

Locomotives

The railway boasts a collection of preserved steam locomotives, including the Locomotive No. 861, built in 1886 by the Belgian manufacturer Couillet. This 0-4-0T engine demonstrates the engineering prowess of its era and continues to be a highlight for both enthusiasts and visitors. The locomotives are maintained to reflect the early 20th-century operations, providing an authentic steam train experience.

What to Expect

Passengers can embark at either Belgrave or Lakeside. Once you have checked in, you are given a ticket and can board the train if it’s ready. Seating is not allocated, so you pick your own seat. This can be a problem if people take the seat you were in after a stop, so be prepared to find a new seat without making a fuss.

The open-sided carriages allow for the unique experience of sitting on the carriage sills, offering unobstructed views of the surrounding landscapes. This is a great way to experience the Puffing Billy steam train, and most of the children and younger adults did this.

At Lakeside, the modern Visitor Centre houses the Railway Café, serving a variety of meals and refreshments. The area also features picnic spots, playgrounds, and paddle boats on Emerald Lake, making it an ideal stop for families. We grabbed a bite to eat and a coffee and then walked around the lake before it was time to board the train for the return journey.

Getting There

By Public Transport: From Melbourne CBD, take a Metro train on the Belgrave line to Belgrave Station. A short, signposted walk connects you to the Puffing Billy station.

By Car: Drive via the M1 and Burwood Highway to Belgrave. Parking is available at the Belgrave Train Station parking lot. There is no on-site parking.

If you are departing from Lakeside, there is a large parking lot next to the station.

Tickets can be purchased online, and this is the best way as they sell out quickly.

What Did We Think?

This was great fun and very enjoyable. The train ride takes you back to the early 1900s as it passes through fern covered gullies and over trestle bridges, making a great day out.

WOW! You just brought back some very happy childhood memories for me. I rode that many, many moons ago, when I still a child. I didn’t know it was still “puffing” around. 🙂

Still going and still as much fun as doing it as a kid.

Next time I go back to Oz, I’ll have to do it again. 🙂
