Constructed as a replica of the original creamery that stood on the site, the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre houses a café, museum, gift and craft shops. The local Visitors’ Information Centre is also here. Cheese tasting of Bega and other Australian cheese varieties is also a large part of the attraction. Located next to the Bega Cheese Factory, it has a large carpark and is well sign posted from the Princes Highway.
Getting There
Bega is located on the Princes Highway, 90 minutes south of Cooma and 30 minutes from Merimbula on the coast. The closest city is Canberra, a three-hour drive to the north. We stopped on our way from Cooma to Merimbula.
Bega Cheese Heritage Centre
The ground floor contains the café, giftshop and cheese tasting area. If you like cheese, this is a great place to try the local produce and purchase some to take home. In the gift shop, you will find souvenirs, farm-themed giftware, local jams & honey.
The café has a nice range of food and drinks for sale. We settled on coffee and cake before exploring he upper level and museum.
The museum offers visitors the chance to see how dairying has shaped the culture of the Bega Valley. The museum demonstrates how dairying has changed from the 1800s, with exhibits of old cheese making equipment. There are also some interestingly decorated cow statues.
Also located on the upper level, The Spotted Cow Gallery has displays from talented local artisans for sale, including paintings, woodwork, lead lighting & decorative arts.
What Did We Think?
A great place to stop, especially if you like cheese tasting. As a bonus you get to learn about the history of dairy farming in the Bega Valley and enjoy some great coffee and cake.
