The Murray River Queen, a Paddle steamer on the Murray River at Loxton

Loxton, South Australia

Loxton, South Australia

Loxton lies on the southern banks of the Murray River in the Riverland region of South Australia. It is a town shaped by the river’s flow, the surrounding citrus groves, and the legacy of pioneering settlers. Founded in the late nineteenth century, Loxton began as a modest river port. Paddle steamers once carried goods along the Murray, linking small communities before roads connected the region. Over time, the area became known for irrigation and agriculture. Today, Loxton is a productive farming district and regional centre.

The town’s fertile soils and dependable irrigation have supported vineyards, almond orchards, and citrus farms for generations. These industries helped shape the local economy and landscape, creating the green ribbons of cultivation that border the river. Although agriculture remains vital, Loxton has also embraced tourism and cultural events. The annual Loxton Lights Festival in December transforms the town into a glowing showcase of creativity, attracting thousands of visitors. The blend of modern community life and rural traditions gives Loxton a distinctive rhythm that reflects the Riverland’s broader identity.

Loxton’s connection to the Murray River continues to influence its lifestyle and environment. The river provides recreation, sustains wildlife, and supplies water for farming. The region’s mild climate and expansive views make it a rewarding place to explore year-round.
