RAAF Memorial Grove Canberra
Located just outside Canberra on The Federal Highway, we have driven past the RAAF Memorial Grove many times and finally decided to stop. The most prominent part of the Grove is the large propeller which is easily visible from the highway. However, once you stop you discover that the area is actually quite large, encompassing a circular pathway and central plinth. Along the path are commemorative plaques dedicated to various squadrons, units, and individuals who have contributed to Australia’s military aviation history.
Commemorative Plaques
Below is a list of some of the plaques found at the grove:
- World War II Squadrons: Honouring the contributions and sacrifices of squadrons such as No. 460 Squadron RAAF, which played a pivotal role in bombing campaigns over Europe.
- Korean War Units: Recognizing the efforts of RAAF personnel who served during the Korean War, including No. 77 Squadron.
- Peacekeeping Missions: Plaques commemorating RAAF involvement in international peacekeeping operations, including missions in East Timor and the Solomon Islands.
- Vietnam War Contributions: Dedicated to squadrons and units that served during the Vietnam War, such as No. 2 Squadron RAAF.
- Training and Support Units: Celebrating the unsung heroes of logistics, training, and support, including No. 1 Flying Training School.
- Women in the RAAF: A tribute to the women who have served in various capacities, from pilots to ground crew.
- Individual Heroes: Plaques honouring individuals who have demonstrated exceptional bravery or made contributions to the RAAF’s legacy.
Getting There
As the grove is adjacent to the Hughie Edwards VC Rest Area, there is plenty of parking. It’s also a great place to stop if you need a break before continuing on.
