Riverland Vietnam War Veterans & post-World War 2 Memorial
The Riverland Vietnam Veterans & Post World War Two Veterans Memorial in Berri is situated on Riverview Drive, directly opposite the Visitor Information Centre in Berri South Australia. It honours the men and women from the Riverland region who have served in conflicts and peace-keeping operations since the end of the Second World War.
Design and Symbolism
The memorial features two sweeping curved brick walls that support five upright etched-glass panels, each approximately 1.8 metres high. These panels depict imagery from a wide range of post-WWII military and peace-keeping engagements — including Korea, the Malayan Emergency, Vietnam, Cambodia, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan among others.
One of the most notable design elements is the etched image of a helicopter. This symbolises the vital role of aerial operations (troop transport, supply delivery, medical evacuation) especially during the Vietnam War.
Dedication & Purpose
The memorial was officially dedicated on 30 October 2009 by Richard Burr (Brigadier, DSC, MVO). It was created to provide a place of remembrance, reflection and education for both locals and visitors. It acknowledges the sacrifices made by those who served in modern conflicts and peace-keeping missions over the last seventy years.
Because of its open riverside location and accessible design, the memorial is a focal point for commemorative events such as ANZAC Day and Vietnam Veterans Day.
