Murals on the ceiling by Francesco Floreani

St Mary’s Catholic Church Bairnsdale Victoria

St Mary’s Catholic Church in Bairnsdale, Victoria, is an example of early 20th-century ecclesiastical architecture. Designed by Augustus Andrew Fritsch, a prominent Catholic architect, the church’s construction began in 1913, replacing an earlier 1883 brick structure. The initial phase included the sanctuary and nave, while the 140-foot tower was completed in 1937 under the direction of Fritsch’s son, Harry French

Architecturally, the church is a blend of Romanesque and Byzantine styles, evident in features like the wheel window and the dome atop the tall tower. However, the church is most renowned for its extensive interior murals. Between 1931 and 1938, Italian artist Francesco Floreani, then unemployed during the Great Depression, adorned the barrel-vaulted ceilings and walls with vivid frescoes. These murals depict a range of religious themes, including the apostles, numerous saints, the Trinity, and vivid portrayals of purgatory, heaven, hell, and the crucifixion.

Getting There

Located in the centre of Bairnsdale, it’s very easy to find, being on the Main Street through town. The size of the tower and its red brick construction makes it stand out. We parked in the carpark behind the Visitors’ Centre, which is near McDonalds.

Inside St Mary’s Catholic Church Bairnsdale

Although the outside is striking with its140-foot tall tower and red brick construction, the inside is stunning. The frescoes by Francesco Floreani cover the entire ceiling and part of the walls making the interior and outstanding piece of art. As the only visitors when we went, we were able to spend as much time as we wanted admiring it all.

This was a great visit with beautiful frescoes to admire.
