Yi Yuan Chinese Garden
The Yi Yuan Chinese Garden in Bendigo is a serene and culturally rich area that reflects the deep historical ties between the Chinese community and the city, dating back to the 1850s gold rush era.
The Yi Yuan Garden, meaning “Garden of Joy,” is located within the Dai Gum San precinct in Bendigo, Victoria. This precinct also houses the Golden Dragon Museum and the Guan Yin Miao (Temple of the Goddess of Mercy). The garden was a collaborative project involving the Bendigo Chinese Association, local and federal governments, and the City of Baoding in Hebei Province, China. Its design is modelled after the Imperial Gardens in Beijing, showcasing authentic Chinese architecture and landscaping.
What to Expect
Although the garden is relatively small, it offers a tranquil environment, and we enjoyed walked through it. As you would expect from a Chinese Garden, it has beautiful, traditional Chinese pavilions and pathways adorned with intricate designs. These make great photos with their colours and designs. There is also a pond filled with fish, providing a peaceful setting as you watch them swimming around.
The garden has a serene atmosphere and and is a pleasant retreat in the centre of Bendigo. If you are visiting the Golden Dragon Museum located next door, it’s a great place to visit.

The Big Lotus Flower
A prominent feature within the Dai Gum San precinct is the Big Lotus Flower sculpture. This five-meter-tall structure symbolizes purity and spiritual awakening in Buddhism.
