Pro Hart Gallery Broken Hill

The Pro Hart Gallery in Broken Hill is one of the cities’ most important cultural landmarks. It celebrates the life and work of local-born artist Kevin Charles “Pro” Hart (1928–2006). Located on Wyman Road, the gallery occupies Hart’s former home and studio, and continues to be run by his family.

On entering, you are greeted by four of Pro’s Rolls Royce cars. He used some of these as a canvas for his work.

Inside, the gallery spreads across several levels, displaying a rich collection of Hart’s paintings, sketches, sculptures, and experimental pieces. His famous depictions of outback landscapes, mining life, and bush characters hang alongside more abstract works, showing the breadth of his creativity. Visitors can also see Hart’s preserved studio, filled with the tools, paints, and inventions he used.

Pro Hart

Born in Broken Hill in 1928 Pro Hart grew up on a sheep station in the far west of New South Wales. Known as “Professor” at school for his love of drawing and tinkering, the nickname was shortened to “Pro” and stuck. After leaving school, he worked in the Broken Hill mines while painting in his spare time, teaching himself techniques that would later define his career.

By the 1960s, his art was being exhibited in Sydney and Melbourne, and his reputation spread nationally and internationally. He became a household name in the 1970s and 1980s, not only for his colourful depictions of the Australian outback but also through his famous television carpet-cleaning advertisements, which showcased his humour and inventiveness. Hart never abandoned Broken Hill, choosing to remain in his hometown even as his fame grew, and producing thousands of works over his lifetime.

In recognition of his contribution to Australian art, Hart was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1976. Until his death in 2006, he continued to experiment with materials ranging from oils and watercolours to food dye and spray paint, all while telling stories of the people and land he knew best.

Today, the Pro Hart Gallery continues his legacy. Visitors can explore his artworks and purchase prints and souvenirs from the gallery shop, while learning about his life. This is a must see gallery when visiting Broken Hill. During our visit (September 2025), the entrance fee was $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for concession card holders and children. Children under 12 were free.
