HMS Fiji (1940) British Light Cruiser

HMS Fiji was the lead ship of the Fiji-class (also called the Crown Colony-class) of light cruisers, built for the Royal Navy during the early stages of the Second World War. Laid down in 1938 and commissioned in 1940, she was designed under the constraints of the London Naval Treaty, which limited displacement but encouraged efficient armament and protection. As a result, Fiji carried twelve 6-inch guns in four triple turrets, providing a powerful broadside for a vessel of her size, along with a substantial anti-aircraft battery.

Following her commissioning, HMS Fiji was deployed to the Atlantic and later the Mediterranean, where British naval forces were heavily engaged against Axis air and naval threats. Her most significant service came during the Battle of Crete in May 1941. Tasked with intercepting German seaborne invasion forces and supporting Allied troops, Fiji operated under intense and sustained air attack from the German Luftwaffe.

On 22 May 1941, after exhausting much of her anti-aircraft ammunition during repeated attacks, HMS Fiji was struck by bombs from German aircraft. Severely damaged and unable to defend herself effectively, she capsized and sank.
