Berrima New South Wales
Located in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Berrima is an historic town with many convict era buildings still intact. now bypassed by the Hume Highway, it has shrunk from its height of the mid 1800s when it had 14 pubs. It does however claim to have the longest continually licensed hotel in Australia, the Surveyor General.
Berrima is on the Register of the National Estate.
Old Berrima Courthouse
One of the original buildings in town, the courthouse now houses a museum on law enforcement in colonial times. Although not open when we visited, we explored it several years ago. Our blog on the courthouse can be found here.
Douglas Weir
Located just outside Berrima, Douglas Weir is a short walk with a small weir and the Wingecarribee River. The track was in poor condition during our visit because of heavy rain over the previous week. Sections of the track were heavily eroded, but this made it more interesting rather than what would usually be a simple downhill walk.
At the end of the track, you are rewarded with a beautiful riverbank and lake next to the weir. The previous week’s rain had filled the weir, and it was overflowing making an interesting man-made waterfall.
Food and refreshments
We passed through town early in the morning and stopped for a coffee and snack at the Gumnut Patisserie. They are other choices for food along the Main Street.
