Having recently visited Green Cape Lighthouse, we also wanted to see the old storehouse at Bittangabee Bay which had been used during its construction. Located seven kilometres north of the lighthouse near the Bittangabee Bay Camping Ground it’s easy to find. The roads were all dirt, but well maintained while we were there. We parked in the day-visitor carpark and followed the sign to the track down to the storehouse. If driving here directly, it’s 20 kilometres south of Eden. As the camping ground is in the Beowa National Park, there is an entrance fee, which can be paid at several ticket machines.
Bittangabee Bay Storehouse
The Bittangabee Bay Storehouse was constructed as a supply store for the nearby Green Cape Lighthouse, which began operation in 1883. This concrete building was essential for the operation of the lighthouse, as there was initially no land access to the site. Until a passable road was built, it was used to house goods and maintain supplies for the lighthouse. Unfortunately, today the storehouse is in extremely poor condition with the doors, windows and roof missing. Considered unsafe, the building is fenced off to prevent access. This also prevents additional damage happening to the ruin.
Access Walking Track
The Bittangabee Bay picnic area to the storehouse circuit, a 700m Grade 4 hiking trail. The high grade is due to the steep and rough condition of the track, as it is not very long. We were very disappointed in the condition of the storehouse as it is very poor, despite its local historical significance. However, the shoreline and rock platform made up for is, as they are beautiful. The red rocks of the shore contrast with the blue water and are really striking.
