Hida Folk Village Takayama
Hida Folk Village offers an introduction to traditional mountain life on the outskirts of Takayama. This outdoor museum brings together around thirty historic buildings from the Hida region. Wooded paths connect farmhouses, workshops and other buildings. They show what the homes and surroundings of rural life used to look like.
Getting There
A bus runs from Takayama Station to Hida Folk Village. You can buy a combined bus and admission ticket at the station. The package includes three tickets for the outward journey, village entry and return trip.
First, give one ticket to the bus driver when you arrive at the village. Next, hand the second ticket to staff at the entrance gate. Keep the third ticket for your return journey to Takayama Station.
Choosing a Walking Route
You could easily spend half a day here, with so many buildings and details to explore. A map from the kiosk offers three walking routes, with different times depending on how much you want to see.
We chose the route covering all the buildings on display and spent around sixty minutes walking around. However, a longer visit would allow more time to explore interiors and study the exhibits. The paths also offer plenty of opportunities to pause for photographs along the way.
Traditional Homes and Everyday Life
The houses vary with some have steep thatched roofs covered in moss, while others have low wooden roofs held down with stones. Open doorways give you a look inside, and there are plenty of small details to notice along the way.
Inside, the rooms many have displays of tools, showing the practical side of life here. Meanwhile, cupboards, sliding screens and racks above the hearths give a sense of how people used these homes.
