Sydney Fish Market

Not just a great place to buy fresh seafood, the Sydney Fish Market is a fun tourist destination. This new, modern building has replaced to old market which was well passed its use-by date. The new Sydney Fish Market officially opened on 19 January 2026. Located at 1 Bridge Road, Glebe, the Wentworth Park light rail stop is approximately 400 metres away.

Getting There

We took the L1 light rail from Sydney Central Station to Wentworth. The light rail is very user friendly, with announcements at each stop telling you what’s close by. The trip takes around 17 minutes followed by a 10 minute to walk to the markets.

Alternatively, onsite parking is available if you prefer to drive. Parking fees depend on how long you stay.

What to Expect

Seafood is naturally the main attraction, but there is much more to discover. Fresh fruit and vegetable stalls, bakeries, cafes and takeaway outlets offer plenty of choices.

Walking past the seafood retailers gives you an appreciation of the enormous variety available. Displays feature everything from familiar fish and prawns to oysters, squid and other seafood. Some outlets even sell live crabs and lobsters.

After wandering through the market, we bought some food and coffee before finding a seat outside overlooking the water. It was a lovely spot to relax, enjoy our morning tea and watch the activity around the harbour.

Best of all, admission is free. Our only expenses were the light rail fares and morning tea, making this an inexpensive Sydney attraction.

When I first looked at that first photo, I thought it was a black and white spider lol. Fish markets are great, we went to a few in Japan (and other places) and I always see a ton of sea life that I didn’t even know existed. There are so many varieties of fish and other sea creatures.
