Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan – Historic Festival Floats in Japan

Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan, also known as the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall, is a museum dedicated to preserving the elaborate floats used during Takayama‘s traditional festivals. Located within the grounds of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, it provides an opportunity to see these historic floats throughout the year.

The Takayama Festival dates back to the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century and consists of two annual celebrations. The Sannō Matsuri Spring Festival is from 14–15 April, while the Hachiman Matsuri Autumn Festival runs from 9–10 October.

The festivals are famous for their magnificent wooden floats, known as yatai, which feature intricate carvings, lacquerwork, gilded decorations, embroidered textiles and colourful lanterns. Many date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and demonstrate the exceptional craftsmanship of Takayama’s traditional artisans. Some floats also feature mechanical puppets, called karakuri, which perform during the festivals.

The museum displays four of the eleven floats used during the Autumn Festival. These are rotated three times annually, allowing different examples to be exhibited throughout the year. Large glass viewing panels enable visitors to examine the elaborate decorations and construction of the floats.

Additional displays explain the history of the festivals, while mannequins dressed in traditional clothing illustrate the costumes worn by participants. The floats are recognised as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties, while the festival’s float traditions form part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Tickets purchased here also give you access to the adjacent Sakurayama Nikkokan museum.
