Wallagoot Gap

Wallagoot Gap New South Wales

Located on the New South Wales far south coast in the Bournda National Park, Wallagoot Gap is an amazing geological feature and great beach. Only a 20-minute drive north of Merimbulah it’s a great place to visit. Not only does it have a great little secluded beach, but it also has a spectacular 20m wide gorge with 30m high cliffs opening to the ocean. If you visit at low tide, you can access another beach just past the gap through the cliffs.

Safety if Swimming

Remember that if you swim here, the beaches are not patrolled. Be very careful as the returning water causes a very strong rip as it flows through the gap and may drag you out to sea.

Getting There

We parked in the Turingal Head picnic area. As this is in the Bournda National Park, an entry fee is applicable. Alternately an annual pass can be purchased from NSW Parks and Wildlife, giving you access to most parks in the state. From the carpark, we followed the signs to the Gap. During our visit, the 300m long track was well maintained and sign posted. It only took around five minutes to walk from the carpark.

Wallagoot Gap

On reaching the Gap, you will find wooded stairs leading down to the beach. This first beach is quite small and as we arrived near high tide, the gap itself was full of water. This meant the waves crashing through were quite impressive. Unfortunately we were unable to reach the outer beach, but just seeing the fist part was worth the trip.
