Burra Heritage Passport
Available at the Burra Visitor Centre, the Burra Heritage Pass is an excellent way to explore the town’s history. Not only does it provide a list and map of locations and buildings to visit, but has a key to allow access to sites otherwise not accessible.
The key requires a deposit which is refunded when returned. Should you still be out when the Centre closes, the BP Service Station will take the key and provide a refund (as of September 2025).
The suggested time to complete the tour is around three hours, but could easily take longer depending on how much time you spend at each location. The Burra Mine itself could take two hours.
We followed the suggestions of the Visitor Information staff by starting at the Bon Accord Mine, followed by the Burra Mine, Redruth Gaol and Hampton Village. From here we followed the trail which is signposted as “Heritage Trail 16”. At each intersection a brown sign points you in the right direction.
This was an excellent option to see everything that Burra had to offer. Being self-paced, it enabled us to miss some places and spend longer at others. The places we found most interesting are listed below. Each contains a link to a blog on our visit. Of course there are many other places on the tour; visit the ones that interest you.
