We visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building twice during our stay in Shinjuku, once during the day and again at night. As it was only a five-minute walk from our hotel, it was easy to visit at different times and enjoy two very different views of Tokyo.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, also known as Tocho, is one of Shinjuku’s most recognisable landmarks. Designed by architect Kenzo Tange and completed in 1991, the complex houses the headquarters of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Its distinctive twin towers rise to a height of 243 metres, making the building an impressive feature of the city’s skyline.

One of the main attractions is the observation decks, located approximately 202 metres above ground level. During our daytime visit, we enjoyed extensive views across Tokyo, with countless buildings stretching towards the horizon. On clear days, visitors may even see Mount Fuji in the distance.

Returning at night offered a completely different experience. The illuminated skyscrapers, streets and surrounding districts created an impressive panorama of the city. We particularly enjoyed seeing Tokyo’s enormous urban landscape lit up after dark.

Another attraction is the projection mapping display, which transforms the exterior of the building into a colourful light show. The moving images and animations are projected across the building’s facade, providing an additional reason to visit after sunset.

Admission to the observation decks is free, making this one of Tokyo’s best-value attractions. However, queues for the lifts can be lengthy, particularly during busy periods. Visitors should also allow time for waiting when returning to ground level.

Getting there is straightforward, as Tochomae Station on the Toei Oedo Line is directly beneath the complex. Alternatively, the building is within walking distance of Shinjuku Station.

For us, visiting both during the day and at night was worthwhile, as each offered a different perspective of Tokyo.
