Budgewoi Footbridge To Dunkey Island NSW Australia
Crossing the Budgewoi Channel, the Budgewoi Footbridge takes visitors from Mackenzie Reserve to Dunkey Island. Interestingly, this island is not natural, as it was created by dredging the channel to improve water flow for the nearby Munmorah Power Station.
How to Get There
Located 90 minutes north of Sydney, or 60 minutes south of Newcastle on the New South Wales Central Coast, it’s a beautiful place to stop and relax. There’s a playground, BBQ facilities and a toilet block located at Mackenzie Reserve. Cafes, a hotel and restaurants are only a 2-minute drive away at the end of Lake Street.
The main reason for our visit was to see the footbridge. Arriving not long after sunrise, very few other people were around and those there were fishing or walking dogs. We took some great photos of the bridge before walking over to the island. With a lot of heavy rain recently and it being high tide, the low-lying island was quite wet under foot. Never-the-less we picked the driest route and walked around. Over the years it has become a haven for birds and is well covered in trees. We spent around 20 minutes walking around.
After finishing our walk, it was time for a coffee, which we drank while relaxing near Budgewoi Creek.
