Tokyo Tower on a Cloudy and Rainy Day
Our visit to Tokyo Tower fell on a cloudy, rainy day, with the top of the tower hidden from view as we approached. Despite the weather, the views from the observation deck were still impressive. Clouds drifted around some of Tokyo’s taller buildings, giving the cityscape a wonderfully atmospheric feel. Below us, we could see Zōjōji Temple, which we planned to visit later.
Located in Tokyo’s Minato district, Tokyo Tower stands 333 metres tall, with observation decks at 150 and 250 metres. Designed by engineer Tachū Naitō, it opened on 23 December 1958 after approximately eighteen months of construction. Its steel lattice structure resembles the Eiffel Tower, while its distinctive orange and white paintwork serves as a safety measure for aircraft. Originally built for television and radio broadcasting, the tower has since become a popular tourist attraction.
For those with a head for heights, glass panels in the floor offer a view straight down, an unnerving way to appreciate how high you are!
We caught the train to Kamiyachō Station and then walked to the tower, which took us about five minutes. Several other stations are within a ten-minute walk, depending on where you’re travelling from.
